Full Certification

This service enables you to affix the QPS certification mark on your complying products. It is the most suitable service if you have continuous production.

Under this service, a representative sample is tested and evaluated to the applicable product standard. Testing may be conducted either at QPS, or at a QPS authorised testing facility. Test reports issued by other accredited North American certification bodies, or by certification bodies members of the IECEE/CB and IECEx schemes are also accepted.

Prior to granting certification QPS will inspect the factory to check the quality system. If the product and the factory are found to comply with all the applicable requirements, QPS will issue a Certification report and a Certificate of Compliance. Your factory will be subject to regular inspections by QPS to ensure that manufactured products continue to comply with the requirements.

Limited Production Certification (LPC)

This is essentially a "batch certification" service designed to accommodate situations where a limited quantity of a given product is manufactured, or the product is intended to be available and distributed in batches.

Under this service, a sample of the product is tested and evaluated the same way as for full certification. The difference is that complying products are labelled by QPS on location using a serialised label, and no regular factory inspections are required.

Field Certification

This service is applicable for one-off, or a very limited number of units of a given product. Every unit will be tested and evaluated on location by a QPS representative against the applicable product standard. If the unit is found in compliance, the QPS representative will approve and label it on the spot, using a serialised label bearing the QPS Certification Mark.

Panel Shop Program

If you are a manufacturer of industrial control panels/assemblies that undergo frequent product design changes, this program is ideal for you.

Under this program, qualified manufacturers are permitted to test and evaluate their own products and prepare the required reports and certification documentation. QPS will review the data and reports and, if found satisfactory, will grant certification.

In order to qualify, you have to demonstrate to QPS that you have sufficient knowledge of the applicable standards and codes, and you have a test facility that meets the applicable requirements of ISO/IEC standard 17025.

To ensure continued compliance with the qualification criteria, QPS will conduct annual re-qualification audits, and regular factory inspections.

Field Evaluation

If you make custom made products, or market the product in North America in limited quantities, or you wish to test the market before committing to full production and certification, then Field Evaluation should be your choice.

Field Evaluation is a fast approval service whereby the product is tested and evaluated on site by a QPS representative to technical requirements accepted by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). The inspection site may be the place of installation, manufacturing, distribution, or any other location. If the product is found in compliance, it will be approved and labeled on the spot, using a special QPS Serialised Field Evaluation Label.

Testing at a QPS Authorised Testing Facility

You can choose to have your product tested at the QPS lab in Toronto, Canada, or at a local test facility qualified by QPS, which is a part of QPS partners’ network. More information on Partners Network is available on our Network Partners Website or contact us in Europe.

Testing at Manufacturer’s Premises (TMP)

If you have a testing facility and you prefer to have testing conducted at your premises, then TMP is the program for you.

In this case, a QPS representative will verify the suitability of your testing facility, conduct the required tests at your location, and prepare the test report and the necessary documentation. If all is OK, and based on the type of approval service, a Certificate of Compliance can be issued, or the product can be labelled with the Field Evaluation Label. Witness Testing Program (WTP)

This program is similar to TMP, except that the testing is conducted by your staff and witnessed by a QPS Representative. In this case, QPS will monitor the testing and prepare the test report and related documentation. If all is OK, and based on the type of approval service, a Certificate of Compliance may be issued, or the product may be labelled with the Field Evaluation Label.

Supervised Manufacturer’s Testing (SMT)

If you wish to have more flexibility and more control over the planning of your tests, then you should choose SMT.

Under this program you will be able to conduct all tests and prepare the required reports and associated documentation. QPS will review and approve the test plan in advance and validate your test data by conducting spot-checks.

To qualify for this service, QPS will assess your testing facility and the technical competence of your staff.

Testing Requirements

Depending on the service option, the following requirements must be used to test and evaluate the product: For Certification, the applicable National electrical safety standards of the USA and/or Canada are used. These standards are issued by nationally accredited standard writing bodies like UL, FM and CSA.

For Field Evaluation in Canada, the CSA Model Codes SPE-1000 and SPE-3000 are used for general purpose products, and electro-medical devices respectively. These requirements are used in conjunction with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).

For Field Evaluation in the USA, the National Electrical Code (NEC)/NFPA 70, as well as the applicable requirements of the relevant equipment standard are used.

Factory Inspections

A factory is defined as the place where the Certification Marks or Labels are affixed to the product, and the required production tests are conducted.

If the product is approved under full certification, then QPS conducts a maximum of 4 factory inspections per year to verify continued compliance of the product and the factory.

In the case of a new factory that has not been inspected by QPS before, an Initial Factory Inspection (IFI) is required.

For factories that are qualified under a special program like Panel Shop or Supervised Manufacturer’s Testing, an annual re-qualification audit is required.

No factory inspections are required under the Limited Production, Field Certification, and Field Evaluation programs.

Equipment used in Explosive Atmospheres

In North America, such equipment is referred to as Hazardous Location (Haz Loc) equipment, and must comply with both, the applicable Haz Loc standard, as well as the applicable electrical safety (“ordinary location”) standard.

As the safety risks associated with Haz Loc equipment are considered to be the highest, approval of such equipment is granted only under a certification program, including Field Certification
